Decisions, Decisions,Decisions...The Journey of the fridge

Updated: Apr 11, 2023

So, she has finally arrived. I hugged her and promised I will never talk bad about her (unlike the previous one), and I hope she'll stay with us for at least 10 years.

Yes, I am talking about our new fridge. (The pronounce Her comes from my native language, where each object has a gender. I think feminine gender for a fridge is highly appropriate.)

3 years ago, my old, old fridge started to make weird noises and after looong pondering we decided to buy a new one (after all, the old one was refurbished, and we had her for over 10 years.) Our family was growing, and I thought we might get a bigger fridge. We went to Sears, and I was like Alice in wonderland. You know, all those fridges with touch screens and see-through doors. I was expecting some of them might start singing. Oh well I just wanted a bigger regular fridge. I am not a big shopper and after while I get quite overwhelmed. I was glad when we finally landed with Kenmore. We used to have side-by-side fridge and this one had the freezer on the bottom. I fell in love. The top part was really big and spacious.... make the story short, we bought it.

They delivered the fridge and had a really hard time to squeeze her in the old spot. Our house is pretty small. It was waaaaay too big. I mean, it fit, but was kind of "overflowing" everywhere.

Hmmm, Hmmm, Hmmm. I wasn't happy. It took too much space and then I came to the realization that the freezer is just "weird". No compartments. You just stack food on top of each other. It was sooo weird....

I started to complain about this and that and just generally expressed my feelings and concerns about the fridge.

As time went on I kind of got used to the space on top and "the mess" on the bottom.

I think the fridge wasn't happy with me either as she started to be noisy, the icemaker broke, and at the end she just completely overheated. We had to start looking again and fast. This one could go anytime. So, we set on computers and spent the whole day browsing stores. I made the decision to downsize and go back to side-by-side, instead of freezer on the bottom. It wasn't an easy task. All the fridges seem to be the same. Unless you want to spend 5k. Reviews are 50/50 so no help either. Delivery date 2 weeks from now. They won't take the old one. After going in circles, we made a choice, and she arrived today. I was so happy.

But.... of course, it's much smaller. I had a hard time to "return" all the food back and I realized how uncomfortable it is to adapt and "rewire" the old way of storing food. We have to make some adjustments and changes.

I also found some items to be long overdue. So, after all, the purging wasn't that pointless. I realized how I often bought bigger packaging, because we had the space. Well not anymore. No more wasting and more planning/preparing.

The search for pans and pots is over, they won't be in the fridge :P

It might seem like I'm complaining, but I don't dare to say anything. She might hear me :).

I actually want to see if this is going to work for us.

And why not? it's just a fridge...

I grew up in times where there was not much need for decisions. There was only one fridge on the market. You want it or not? that was the only decision people had to make. And of course, money.

Now you need to decide about the size inside and out, the color, the material, gloss or mate, door alarm, child lock, freezer up, down, side, drawers, lights, warranty, icemaker, water dispenser... and that's just the basic offer. I don't even want to know about the advanced ones. (They can be connected with google or alexa :P). And then they bring it, and you might not like it anyway, because the other one had something better. Or you are the lucky one who is not difficult and is happy with what is. :)

Who would think that buying a fridge can be such an expanding experience of repatterning old habits.

Oh well, what fridge do you like? (that I can make an easier decision in the future :P)

BTW: I'll wait with those magnets for a while :P
